Blair’s dream football union

TONY Blair wanted a British football league establishe­d to maintain cultural links across the UK following devolution.

The former PM said it was important to keep the “strong ties” that bound England and Scotland.

One of the ex-labour leader’s first acts when he came to power in 1997 was to hold a fresh referendum on Scottish devolution.

He said: “I always thought we should be looking at ways of making sure that people felt a connection.”
