New deal at Hoops for Jozo

JOZO SIMUNOVIC is eyeing more progress at Celtic after being stared-out by Lionel Messi.

The Bosnian international and skipper Scott Brown warmed up for tonight’s Champions League showdown against Paris St Germain by signing new deals at Parkhead. Simunovic has penned an improved four-year contract until 2021, while Brown has extended for 12 months to take him to 2019.

Rodgers expects his central defender to flourish with Champions League experience having had his eyes opened during an encounter with the Barcelona superstar in last term’s group-stages at Parkhead.

The boss explained: “Defenders will develop against the level of movement and speed and technique.

“I remember talking to Jozo last year and I said: Go on and tell me, what was it like to face Messi?

“He told me: Every time I turned round he was staring at me!

“Jozo just said: He was looking at me and it unnerved me. That’s the level of player.

“You don’t get that look in Scotland, well you do, but they might be looking for something else! They stare in a physical way, like what are you doing big yin!

“Jozo is a young player and this is a great arena for him.

“Once he’s fit and trains consistently he’s an outstanding talent.

“So it’s great news for our squad because we’re trying to build and create something here.

“I’m delighted for both players.”
