Mum died after refusing antibiotics
A BREASTFEEDING mum died days after refusing to take antibiotics for her severe earache because she feared they could harm her three-month-old baby.
College lecturer Rhianne Statombarnett, 30, was found unconscious at her home with her son crying beside her.
She was taken to hospital where doctors discovered she had developed the rare ear infection mastoiditis that progressed to meningitis. She died shortly afterwards. Days earlier Rhianne of Wilmslow, Cheshire had told GP Matthew Jones she had an unbearable earache and headache.
He told her inquest in Manchester: “There was no evidence of mastoiditis at the time. I did suggest antibiotics but Rhianne refused and explained she did not want this to affect her whilst she was breastfeeding.” Verdict: Natural causes.
