President: I killed victim over a look

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN

PHILIPPINES president Rodrigo Duterte has said he stabbed a person to death as a teenager.

He said: “At 16, I killed someone.” This was “just over a look”, an audience heard him say.

The killing was during his violent teenage years when he often brawled and was “in and out of jail”.

Mr Duterte, 72, was giving a speech to Filipinos at a summit in Da Nang, Vietnam. His spokesman said the words were “in jest” as the leader used “colourful language” to address Filipinos overseas.

The leader has faced criticism from human rights campaigners for his deadly crackdown on drugs in the Philippines.

Mr Duterte has encouraged extrajudicial killings of those in the illegal trade. ARMED police patrol among the mulled wine and food stalls on the first day of a Christmas market.

Officers carried Heckler and Koch semi-automatic carbines in Manchester. Armed undercover police in plain clothes were also on duty.

Albert Square in the city centre is protected by a new ring of concrete and steel barriers, six months after the Manchester Arena bombing nearby which claimed the lives of 22 people.

Supt Chris Hill said: “People’s natural response when they see extra security can be one of fear or concern, worrying that it’s more dangerous.

“I want to assure people that we are strengthening protective security as an extra precaution and it should make people feel more comfortable.”
