Lack of CPR know-how is killer in bed

- BY MARK WAGHORN

FOUR in five men who suffer cardiac arrest during sex die – because their partners do not know CPR.

Only a third of cases have “bystander CPR”.

But chest compressions have been found to double the chances of survival.

Although the risk of having an attack during sex is low, death rates are high, a 13-year study in Portland, Oregon, showed.

Dr Sumeet Chugh, of Cedars-sinai Heart Institute, Los Angeles, said: “This highlights the importance of efforts to educate the public on CPR irrespective of circumstances.”

But men are more likely than women to receive CPR in public – and are twice as likely to survive as a result of intervention, a study at Pennsylvania University found.
