So Carrie Gracie has turned down a rise of £45,000. It’s just another example of people in public office being paid far in excess of what the rest of us receive.

The BBC pay themselves far too much, as do MPS, social services executives and bankers.

The ordinary people know these positions are simply jobs for the establishm­ent.

We’re always being told there is no money for vital services, but the establishm­ent will always ensure they keep the national wealth in their domain.
