Hilarious girls giving TV a much-needed boot in the Derry air

-

the writing is sharp, the characters are brilliantly casted and... it’s just really, really funny.

Jamie Lee O’donnell – who to be fair is actually from the city – is the immediate stand out as the carefree and cocky Michelle. That said, each of the four girls have their own brilliant and all-too-familiar personalities. There’s the weird one, the geeky one and the uptight one – and they each get a handful of killer lines.

The only recurring criticism I came across upon reading through reams of positive responses online was an issue Another explosive moment on that splendid second record with the accents which seems daft, really. Firstly, the cast all sound as close to Derry wans as you would go without the

requirement of subtitles for a national audience. Secondly, the lingo and dialogue is really authentic – which is more important.

And thirdly, this is a daft comedy not a fussy period A dinky lullaby from their arsenal of understated gems. drama. As Alan Partridge found out, getting a second series really isn’t that easy - so it’s to Lisa and the cast’s credit Derry Girls has earned itself a recommission. I’m a huge fan and not just for nostalgia (including the fantastic ‘oh-i-forgot-about-thatsong’ style soundtrack) and the fact I’ve spent a great deal of time up the north west. It’s just a really fun and entertaining watch, from start to finish. Episode 2 went out last night and the series continues online and on Thursdays at 9pm. One of the Snow Patrol side projects – Gary Lightbody with Iain Archer and REM’S Peter Buck (among others)
