£7k gongs of Monty driver

Daily Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - NEWS -

MEDALS won by Monty’s wartime driver have sold for £6,960 at auction.

John “Jack” Burford was with Field Marshal Montgomery from 1942 to the end of fighting in 1945.

King George VI handed Jack his Military Medal for bravery in Sicily in 1943 and Monty wrote: “His courage under fire was an example to us all.”

The Bonhams sale in London included a picture of Jack, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, with Monty and Churchill as passengers.

He moved to Australia and died in 2006 aged 85.
