Store salads’ salt ‘8 times bag of crisps’

SUPERMARKET salads have up to eight times the salt of a bag of ready-salted crisps, a study found.

Marks & Spencer’s teriyaki chicken sticky rice salad had 3.5g while a small bag of Walkers crisps contains 0.46g. The salmon salad version has 3.05g.

Action on Salt also found Tesco’s tuna, egg and noodle salad had 1.5g.

Just 17% of 312 salads surveyed had a green traffic light on packaging.

And a third of salads in 213 restaurants, takeaways and coffee shops were high in salt, said AOS.

Chief Prof Graham Macgregor said the lack of action was “shocking”.

M&S said ingredients like soy had “naturally higher” salt, adding: “Over 82% of our products meet [government] salt targets.”
