Florida farewell to Dale
DALE WINTON’S FLORIDA FLY DRIVE Channel 5, 10pm
IT was a glorious return to TV when Dale Winton filmed this joyful four-week road trip around America’s Sunshine State.
Strolling on the beach, making saucy remarks about the buff bodies walking past, and getting stuck into the wild, weird and wonderful parts of Florida, Dale seemed to be thoroughly enjoying his life.
The news of his death aged 62 in April shocked the nation and all his fans who have followed his career since the early days of Supermarket Sweep in the 90s.
This travelogue came off the air as a mark of respect, but returns tonight with its second episode, now a poignant tribute to the TV personality.
With fabulous stories, such as attending Shirley Bassey’s birthday party and his friendship with the late restaurateur Prady Balan, Dale, in shorts and shades, fits right in with the glamorous residents.
In this episode, he visits the extravagant Casa Casuarina in Miami, an upscale boutique hotel that was formerly the home of fashion designer Gianni Versace until his untimely death in 1997.
From the leopardprint cushions to the swimming pool made out of thousands of 24-carat gold tiles, to the 10ft bed in the Versace Suite, the legendary fashion designer’s legacy is plain to see.
Dale then hits the beach, quizzing lifeguard Chris and gawping at all the beautiful bodies on Muscle Beach.
In Little Havana, he rolls his own cigar and is introduced to the delights of Cuban coffee.
And finally, he gets a personal tour of Billionaires’ Row, which some of the richest people in America call home.
