ARE You Being Served? star Mike Berry has told of his sadness at not being cast in the remake, but fears it will not be as good anyway.

The actor, who played Bert Spooner in the sitcom, said: “I’m disappointed they didn’t ask me to be in it. I fancy Arthur English’s role of Mr Harman, though Arthur Smith is brilliant casting.”

Mike, 73, admitted he was “surprised” at the decision to revamp the BBC One classic, adding: “I thought maybe it was a mistake.” It airs on Sunday and stars John Challis, Jason Watkins and Sherrie Hewson. Mike said: “I’m intrigued to see how it turns out and how the characters work with different actors. Some are well-matched, but they’ll never be quite the same and if you compare the new ones with the originals, I think you’ll be disappointed.” The original show ran from 1972 to 85. Mike was also a pop singer, with chart hits in the 1960s and early 1980s. He joins Marty Wilde, Eden Kane and Mark Wynter on The Solid Gold Rock n Roll Show UK tour this autumn.
