A risky playing card on leader’s ‘weak spot’

- BY JACK BLANCHARD, DEPUTY POLITICAL EDITOR

THE gulf between Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith on Europe was the only story in town last night.

On many issues – the economy, welfare, NHS – there is little between the two vying for Labour leadership.

But Mr Corbyn’s lukewarm EU campaign might be the issue that has damaged him in supporters’ eyes. Mr Smith is desperate to exploit what he believes is his rival’s weak spot.

The past fortnight has seen Mr Smith go further with his attacks – culminating in last night’s display where he all but accused Mr Corbyn of lying about his support for Remain.

It is risky – a third of Labour voters backed Leave. But Mr Smith knows he must make up ground. The question is whether it has come too late.
