1871: The first internatio­nal rugby match took place in Edinburgh, with Scotland beating England.

1988: After more than 1,000 matches, Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence announced he would retire at the end of the season at the age of 39.

1989: Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record five penalties in the Second Division match between Crystal Palace and Brighton. Only two were scored.

2004: France’s 24-21 victory over England gave them a Grand Slam in rugby union’s RBS 6 Nations.

2007: Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s completed their takeover of Liverpool.
