Miss Paula is nicely set up for a Fall

- IAN HYLAND

Thursday night seems to be BBC2’s night for creepy crime thrillers set in Belfast. And if you were a fan of The Fall you will have enjoyed the gripping three-parter which kicked off in its old slot last night.

In fact, Paula felt so much like The Fall at times, I was half-expecting to see Jamie Dornan out doing some moonlit jogging or Gillian Anderson down at the police station wearing one of her silky blouses and speaking in breathy tones. The plot revolved around a science teacher whose life began to unravel following a one-night stand with a handsome-yet-creepy odd-job man. Paula, played by rising star Denise Gough, left, also had an affair with married father-of-two Philip, the PE teacher at her school.

That ended rather abruptly when Paula suddenly decided his advances were about as welcome as Donald Trump at the Pope’s birthday party.

Paula’s odd-job man – played by Victoria star Tom Hughes – discovered the affair and began to blackmail Philip.

That’s where things started to turn grisly and one of them ended up dead.

I won’t spoil it for you by revealing the murderer. Let’s just say the police were soon on Paula’s case, asking some very personal questions.
