Fire warning over 3,450 Beko dryers

Five models may have faulty part

BEKO has admitted up to 3,450 tumble dryers are faulty after a fire involving one of them killed a mum of two.

The firm announced it would repair five models, including the DCS85W, which was responsible for at least 20 fires and the death of Mishell Moloney, 49.

Beko said 8kg and 9kg dryers sold between May 2012 and May 2013 were a fire risk due to a faulty component that “could fail and overheat”.

Owners are urged to stop using the machines immediately. Mrs Moloney, of Rubery, Birmingham, died in a blaze caused by a Beko DCS85W in February last year. Her inquest heard the model was behind 20 other fires. But Beko has taken until now to launch a repair programme. It recalled 6kg and 7kg dryers five years ago. Rival Whirlpool said in November 2015 it had sold 5.3 million appliances which could catch fire. Beko’s Andrew Mullen said: “We would urge customers who think they may be affected to check.”
