PARENTS WANT ME TO KILL BABY

-

Dear Coleen

I have a terrible dilemma – I’m pregnant with my ex’s child.

I also have religious and cultural issues as far as my family is concerned. My parents have given me an ultimatum – either keep the baby and leave the house or get rid of it and stay to be frowned upon.

I’ve only just turned 20 and I’m still studying. I want to keep the baby more than anything, but how can I leave my family home with nothing?

I haven’t told my ex I’m pregnant yet. Please help.

Coleen says

I’m sorry your parents have taken this stance. I can understand them being disappointed because getting pregnant while you’re still so young and at university is not what they wanted for you.

But it’s sad that your only options are to leave the house with the baby or get rid of it and stay and be judged by them. As a mum, I don’t understand this lack of love and compassion.

First of all, speak to your GP and explain the issues, and discuss the options.

I think you should also let your ex know and talk it over – not with any expectation that you’ll be together and raise the child, but I think he has a right to know if you’re keeping the baby.

He might be supportive, even if he doesn’t want the two of you to be together.

And his family may also be willing to help and want to be part of the child’s life.

If you’re at university, student services can supply information about studying while pregnant and any benefits you might be entitled to. You might also have access to a counsellor.

The bottom line is, it’s your life and your choice, but get as much support and advice as you can from professionals, as well as your friends.
