Tory arrogance cost them dear

-

Congratulations to Jeremy Corbyn and to all the Labour party staff and volunteers involved with such a glorious election campaign at very short notice. They might just have saved the country from Tory extremism and many downtrodden British people will breathe a sigh of relief.

Jeremy conducted a brilliant campaign, with thousands flocking to hear him speak at his impromptu rallies. He never faltered for a moment, unlike Theresa May who was weak and wobbly. He conducted himself admirably in the wake of media hostility, turning the other cheek time and time again. The Tories are humiliated and their manifesto is now in shreds. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon Theresa May’s arrogance has cost her big style. It was all me, me, me! Forget the cuts, forget the NHS and social care crisis. Forget tuition fees and the police cuts – and so it goes on. Well, the British public didn’t swallow it wholesale and they turned out in their millions to show this with a vote of no confidence in her – which is exactly what she deserved. Roger Grant, Thurnscoe South Yorks Mr Corbyn was well underestimated both by the Tories and his own Labour MPs. He has proved he is tougher than people gave him credit for by delivering a strong and truthful campaign in an unflappable style. I think he would have gained more votes if he didn’t have the issue of his former connections with the IRA hanging over head. However, now he must prepare for the Brexit negotiations as Labour should be involved in all discussions. A R Hunt, Plymouth Are our politicians missing the point again? People have seen prices rise and living standards being squeezed since the decision to leave the EU and all this before we have actually left.

Is our election result telling us to revisit this decision? May and her hard Brexit is not what would be best for Britain. Clive Morris, Falmouth, Cornwall I find it very hard to believe the Tories won, albeit with no overall majority. When you think of all those on benefits and zero hours contracts, the struggling junior doctors and nurses, you have to wonder how people fell for Theresa May’s lies.

How anyone could have voted for this Government of incompetents is beyond my comprehension. Ian Fleck, Par, Cornwall I am so glad the turnout among young voters was so high. I am getting on and will not have to live through 50 years of austerity, Brexit and crippled NHS and education systems. I am reassured to hear the voices of the young. Kath Tillinghast via Facebook Jeremy Corbyn seems to think he won but the Tories are still the largest party. Our country is in a perilous state, there is no doubt about that. Let’s hope more youngsters start voting in future elections. It’s my belief that we need another general election as soon as possible before things get worse. Mike Minchella, Scarborough
