ORWELLIAN NIGHTMARE
#by I found Friday’s column
the brilliant Ros Wynne-Jones riveting. Some 50 people, Ros included, read George Orwell’s 1984 from cover to cover at the Senate House at University College London.
During more than 11 hours of reading, the participants described a world of perpetual war, endless austerity, constant government surveillance and public manipulation. The parallels with today’s Britain under the Tories are clear for all to see. Eric Thorpe, Salford
# As a life-long Labour voter, I am so proud of what the young people of this country have done at this election. They came out in their tens of thousands and made their voices heard.
Too many people do not take the trouble to vote, but the youth of today have put them to shame. John Hardy, Hull
# Thanks to the Daily Mirror for your great election coverage. It was informative, in-depth and amusing. But given Mrs May’s precarious position, I wouldn’t put the Mirror Chicken in mothballs just yet! Matt Hartley, Leeds
# I think that M Carroll’s letter against arming the police made a lot of sense (Madeuthink, June 9), especially the comment that hardened criminals would be more likely to arm themselves. P Carson, Rhondda Cynon Taf
Congratulations to Robert and Anne Parry from Milton Keynes who celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary today.
