The ex-policeman, now a BBC pundit, was honoured for his charity work as well as services to Rugby League.

Double Olympic rowing champion Heather Stanning is an OBE. She retired after defending her women’s pair title with Helen Glover in Rio. Their gold at London 2012 was the first title won by British female rowers.

Boxer John Conteh, 66, who held the world light-heavyweight title from 1974 to 1978, was amazed at his MBE. The Scouser said: “Where I grew up the only letters you got were from the DHSS.”

Judy Murray follows her sons in landing an honour. The ex-GB Fed Cup tennis coach receives an OBE. Andy was knighted in the New Year and Jamie was made OBE in 2016.
