The Who guitarist said he has also “written some cheques” to help out.

Pete, 72, said: “I know people that lived in the building – I know four families. They were Spanish. They’re not OK. A mother lost her daughter, two little girls were in comas. So I’ve been helping with those families.”

Pete, who grew up in nearby Shepherd’s Bush, and bandmate Roger Daltrey are part of Artists for Grenfell – the group organised by Simon Cowell for a charity single.

He recorded his bit for the track – Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water – at Sarm Studios yesterday and said: “It’s fantastic.”

A source said Robbie Williams sings the first line, adding: “All the artists performed the entire song. Everyone decided Robbie’s version of the first line was a great way to open.” A rap by grime artist Stormzy precedes Robbie’s vocals. The track, out tomorrow, also features Brian May, Rita Ora and Louis Tomlinson.

A family of five feared dead in the blaze are alive and well. It is believed they are the Khudairs, from Syria, who lived halfway up the block.
