Drug fugitive swims sea to cops on Rock

- BY LUCY THORNTON

A DRIPPING wet fugitive wanted over a £1.2million drug smuggling inquiry handed himself in to police in Gibraltar after swimming across from Spain.

Jason Waterman, 32, arrived at the British territory late on Monday night, with a bag of soggy clothes.

He told police he wanted to surrender after seeing himself on a BBC Crimewatch Roadshow appeal that morning.

It is thought Waterman, originally from the Watford area, swam so he could give in to the British Defence Police and avoid Spanish border guards.

He is accused of being around Bagby airfield, near Thirsk, North Yorks, in 2015, after a plane arrived loaded with cocaine. The National Crime Agency is seeking to extradite him.
