Imagine there’s no Brexit… it’s easy if you try

-

DONALD Tusk quoted John Lennon lyrics yesterday as he added his voice to the clamour of European leaders who think Brexit can still be stopped. The EU President referenced Imagine as he said he “dreams” we could yet change our mind and stay in the bloc.

Speaking at the start of a two-day summit in Brussels, he said: “Some of my British friends have asked me whether Brexit could be reversed and whether I could imagine an outcome where the UK stays part of the European Union.

“I told them that in fact the European Union was built on dreams that seemed impossible to achieve, so who knows?”

And quoting the Beatles legend, he added: “You may say I am a dreamer but I am not the only one.”

His intervention follows comments last week by French President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Angela Merkel’s right-hand man Wolfgang Schauble, who both said “the door remains open”.

Many EU leaders believe the PM’s failure to win support at the ballot box for hard Brexit has opened a slim possibility that Brexit will not happen at all.

Speaking at a press conference later in the day, Mr Tusk said having seen his native Poland beat Communism in the 1980s he believes political “miracles” like stopping Brexit can come true.
