Family members and friends do nearly half of all childcare, saving parents nearly £12,000 a year, research claims.

The figure is even higher if mums and dads get loved ones to do the work they would otherwise shell out to live-in nannies and nurseries, according to Churchill Home Insurance.

More than a quarter of grandparents, some 3.5 million, regularly look after their grandchildren.

Martin Scott, head of Churchill home insurance said: “With children cared for in a multitude of locations it is important child proofing is not forgotten, as their safety should always be a primary concern.

“If you’re looking after a child in your own property, remember you could potentially be liable if they have an accident in your care, so it is important they are as protected as much as possible.”
