WORRY OVER FRESH START AT COLLEGE

-

Dear Coleen

I’m 16 and in September I’m moving to a new college. At first, I was really excited for a fresh start as I’ve not had the best last year at school, and getting away from certain people and situations seemed like the best thing. However, the closer it gets to starting, the more nervous I’m feeling.

I know that staying on to do sixth form at my current school would definitely not be the right thing for me, but I’m terrified I’ll feel like a fish out of water being away from my friends.

I’d really appreciate some advice on how to handle the move from school to college, especially when I’m leaving everyone behind.

A big change is always a bit scary – whatever age you are. But it seems to me you felt ready for change, so trust your gut instinct. There might not be anyone from your school going to your new college, but there will be other kids starting there who are in exactly the same boat as you and have chosen it because of the course it offers and not because their mates are going.

I think your decision shows you have a strong independent spirit and aren’t happy to just follow the crowd. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends and open up your social life to lots more possibilities.

And you’re not leaving everyone behind. You’re not emigrating to Australia. You can still see your friends from school outside of college and you’ll have tons to talk about. Have a little faith in yourself and your own judgment.

And, remember, the thought of starting something new is usually worse than the reality.

Good luck.
