As a post-op male to female transsexual, I feel in a position to comment on the letter from the husband whose wife reacted very badly to news that he was taking hormones to transition (Dear Coleen, June 27).

Let’s look at it from the wife’s perspective. Here is a woman who was blindsided by her husband’s coming out. I know she’ll feel more than anger – she’ll feel betrayed and her husband’s revelation will even make her question her own sexuality and sanity. She’ll question why she didn’t recognise his secret during their marriage.

This is a life changer. They weren’t in therapy beforehand – the husband/ TS just showed her his new breasts and said ‘Here I am!’

How he handled this is more his fault than the wife’s over-the-top reaction. Name and address withheld, via email
