MONK FIGHTS HIS OLD CLUB FOR HOWSON

- BY JAMES NURSEY

NEW Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk is ready to upset his old club Leeds by beating them to Jonny Howson.

Mirror Sport understands Boro are ready to meet Norwich’s £5million price tag for Howson. The former Leeds trainee is keen to quit Carrow Road after turning down a new deal and wants to return north.

He initially hoped to clinch a move back to Elland Road, where he broke through as a youngster before moving to Norwich in 2012.

But Boro have parachute payments following their relegation from the Premier League and owner Steve Gibson has promised to back new boss Monk in the transfer market.

Monk had been trailing Howson (left) while in charge at Leeds and still wants him after quitting and taking over at Boro.

Mirror Football revealed on May 4 that the Canaries were willing to sell their vice-captain, 29, after massive cuts were made to their budget.
