THE rats are abandoning a sinking Tory ship as Cabinet ministers scramble to distance themselves from the pay cap.

Ministers were defending it as recently as the start of last month but now the election backlash is really biting.

Austerity was always a Tory choice, never an economic necessity. So when this panicking mob bow to the inevitable, and have to give decent wage rises to nurses and teachers, they will deserve no credit.
