Faulty £1 may see collector coining in £3k
A COLLECTOR has found a rare double-dated £1 coin possibly worth £3,000.
Richard Bird, 29, looked at thousands of pounds from takeaways, shops and arcades before discovering the “rogue” currency.
The window cleaner, from Hull, had created an online forum to obtain commemorative Beatrix Potter coins for his daughter, Ava Jane, three.
Yet he said of this latest find: “It’s brilliant but I will probably offer it at auction with a £3,000 reserve.”
The coin has 2016 on one side and 2017 around the edge of the reverse.
The Royal Mint said: “Quality checks highlighted a fault. These coins were removed before they entered circulation. We are investigating how this one got into the public domain.”
