Cilic total second-best

-

NO matter what Marin Cilic tried, he was destined to be runner-up at Wimbledon this year.

He was outdone by Roger Federer in the final – and also in the tables for two of the stats from the tournament.

Austrian Dominic Thiem (right) pipped Cilic to top spot for most challenges won with 10 compared to the Croatian’s nine.

Cilic also finished second in the race to be crowned king of aces at SW19. He boomed down 135 point-winning serves – four behind Sam Querrey, Andy Murray’s quarter-final conqueror.

THE BBC used the fact they would have the nation’s attention thanks to the Wimbledon final to announce the 13th Doctor Who. Despite the presence of David Tennant (right) sparking talk of a comeback, Jodie Whittaker was announced as the first female to play the Time Lord role.

The reveal was more dramatic than the final. EVEN in the heat of the moment and with the tears flowing Roger Federer didn’t forget his responsibilities. One of the first things he did when he returned to his chair after claiming his eighth title was put on his gleaming Rolex watch. It’s the least he could do for the £11million-plus a year he gets from the luxury watch makers.
