How Whiting was snared and law change achieved

July 2000: Sarah Payne is snatched from near her grandparen­ts’ home. Her body is later discovered in a field. February 2001: Roy Whiting is charged with abducting and murdering the schoolgirl.

November 2001: Whiting goes on trial at Lewes crown court. Jury hears evidence from witnesses including Sarah’s oldest brother Lee. December 2001: Whiting is convicted after the trial hears a strand of Sarah’s hair was found in his van. He is jailed for life. September 2008: Sarah’s Law is tested in four areas of England and Wales. April 2011: The Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme rolls out across the whole country. October 2014: Sarah’s dad Mike dies after battling alcoholism. JAILED Roy Whiting
