Browsers to prove users are 18 before watching net porn

- BY JASON BEATTIE Head of Politics

ONLINE porn users will have to prove they are 18 before signing into sex sites, under new internet rules.

Websites that do not introduce age checks could be blocked by a watchdog created to police the law.

Campaigners welcomed the clampdown. Will Gardner, chief executive of internet safety charity Childnet, said: “Protecting children from exposure, including accidental exposure, to adult content is incredibly important, given the effect it can have on young people.” But the NSPCC warned age checks alone are not enough. A spokesman said: “We are calling for social networks to be required by law to give under-18s Safe Accounts with extra protections built in.” Digital Minister Matt Hancock said the new rule is part of the Digital Economy Act, which comes in next year.
