LYLE BATTLES TO A BRONZE

- FROM ADAM HATHAWAY at the London Stadium

GUTSY Scot Maria Lyle dug deep for her second bronze of the games in the T35 100m – after fearing she would have to pull out of the championships.

But Sammi Kinghorn, who broke the world record in the T53 200m at the weekend, could not repeat the trick in the 400m and came in third in a desperate finish behind China’s Hangzhuan Zhou. Teenager Lyle (right) came third – behind Aussie Isis Holt, who clocked a world record 13.43 secs – with an agonising left leg injury that meant she could not walk until last weekend.

Lyle, 17, said: “I was preparing myself not to run.

“My leg became inflamed between my shin and my calf, so I have had loads of injections and painkillers. “It was only this week I was able to run, last week I wasn’t able to walk so it has been a quick turnaround.” Kinghorn, paralysed in a horrific forklift accident when she was 14, still has chances in the 100m and 800m on Sunday to add to her 200m gold.

Her father Neill, who was driving the forklift at the time, surprised his daughter by being trackside – she had not expected to see her parents until Sunday.

But she admitted she had been distracted by her first success and had not prepared properly for this event.

Kinghorn said: “I did not think they would be there. I did not sleep at all on Saturday.

“It has been difficult to try and put that medal away and think about the next one.”

GB wheelchair superstar Hannah Cockroft goes for her third gold of the games – and a 10th world title – in tonight’s T34 400m final. Welshman Rhys Jones will contest the T37 100m final after coming through his heat in a personal best of 11.69 secs last night.
