Croll looks like a studious stage school nerd. The clean, keen, irrepressibly cheery attitude of this second album shows a performer keen to impress. A bouncy product of Sir Paul McCartney’s LIPA academy, Staffordshire-bred Dan even had a one-on-one with Mr Thumbs Up. Craftsmanship is palpable and he does a variety of moods from sultry (January) to sub-Jesus and Mary Chain grindcore (24). The problem is, locating the burning desire driving the creativity behind the melodic sweetness isn’t easy.
