Fallon launches steel row fleet
SIR Michael Fallon yesterday cut some British steel to launch the building of the Royal Navy’s £8billion new fleet of frigates and revealed they will be called City class.
The Defence Secretary also said the first of the eight Type 26 vessels will be called HMS Glasgow.
It comes after the Daily Mirror revealed 65% of the steel needed for the fleet will be bought from Sweden.
Officials yesterday found some UK steel for Sir Michael to symbolically cut. In October, he had to cut French steel for the new Dreadnought submarines.
He said: “Today marks a historic milestone for the Royal Navy, Scottish shipbuilding and UK defence.”
Ministry of Defence chief Tony Douglas said: “The Type 26 is truly a national endeavour.”
