Patriot games as we head to abyss

AS it becomes ever clearer that Brexit is a potentially catastrophic act of national self-harm, the patriotic case for remaining in the EU grows ever stronger.

With even the Leaver liars advocating compromises with Brussels, their dream is fast turning into our nightmare. As reality bites, we need to admit that quitting the EU would be foolish and leaving isn’t inevitable.

Unless we turn back, resentful future generations will demand to know why we were stupid enough to allow a protest vote to hurt millions of hard-working Brits.

Voters were dishonestly sold Brexit as an answer to legitimate problems, but they will pay the price with their jobs, rights and public services, as Nigel Farage swans around the world, filling his bank account.

Parliament is stripped of all authority when powerful politicians are pursuing a policy they know to be disastrous, going down a road they argued would impoverish and weaken Britain. Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn were Remainers, so for them both to now advocate what they had warned against is madness. Flaky Farage was, for once, unintentionally right when he told me shortly before the referendum that a 52-48 result would be “un- finished business”, making a second poll necessary. The same would be true of a Remain result with a similarly narrow margin. I readily accept that only a second referendum could override the first. Those who voted for Brexit may change their minds, furious that the promise of an extra £350million a week for the NHS was a lie, and realising lower living standards aren’t a price worth paying for barely changed migration policies. We need MPs to argue forcefully for a vote on the real options Britain now has, not the ideals once presented by the Leavers.

This is the time to test Corbyn & Co, who left the door open for another referendum at their last party conference, and new Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable, who’s been calling for an exit from Brexit.

It’s also time to test the mettle of saner Tories like Ken Clarke and Anna Soubry, who too often seem to make positive noises, then vote in the wrong direction. Leavers Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Liam Fox are just postponing the pain by admitting that Brexit won’t really mean Brexit in March 2019, as they extend the deadline for making trade and movement deals by a few years.

With former Vote Leave campaign director Dominic Cummings labelling Brexit Secretary David Davis “thick as mince” the Leavers are falling apart, blaming each other for the mess as our country suffers.

Self-defeated May’s incapable of acting decisively, so it will fall on others to demonstrate leadership.

Patriots would stand up against the lying Brexit elite destroying Britain.
