Jose blasts fees frenzy

- FROM DAVID McDONNELL

JOSE MOURINHO has hit out at the crazy amount Premier League clubs have been paying for average players.

Manchester City spent £130million on three full-backs, while Manchester United shelled out £75m for Romelu Lukaku this month and £89m on Paul Pogba last season.

Reds boss Mourinho said: “I don’t think the problem is what you pay for Paul Pogba. I think the problem is with the other group, which is a big group.

“Players like Pogba . . there are one or two big transfers per window. The other is where you have 100 transfers and, for me, that’s the dangerous area of the market. That’s what worries me a bit because now we speak about £30m, £40m or £50m in such an easy way.”

Of Lukaku he added: “We spent big money on a striker because, with strikers, you spend big or you don’t get.

“So our big investment was on a player we had to have.”

He contrasted City’s £217m spree with the frugal approach of Spurs: “They spent zero pounds, right? Amazing. They keep Dele Alli, Alderweireld, Kane, Eric Dier (above).”
