Police asked: Do you want to carry gun?

- BY TOM PETTIFOR Chief Crime Correspondent

POLICE in England and Wales are to be asked if they want to carry guns.

The Police Federation will also question its 123,000 members whether they want to be routinely issued with Tasers.

Most UK police do not carry guns but recent terrorist attacks have increased concern. In the London Bridge atrocity on June 3, PC Wayne Marques fought the three attackers with just his baton.

Officers will be asked if they want to see more specialist armed officers. Numbers are down 18% to 5,639 since 2009.

The federation’s Che Donald said the question of routinely arming the police was challenging but the “threat, harm and risk to public and to officers” had changed significantly.
