‘Tribunal may have avoided Charlie clash’

- BY THOMAS HORNALL

CHARLIE Gard’s parents may have been spared months of “false hope” and legal wrangling if tribunals were used instead of courts, a specialist claims.

Expert panels deciding similar cases could help “avoid the worst features of enormous public discussion and enormous length and expense”, according to Oxford University physician Dominic Wilkinson.

Professor Wilkinson added: “They wouldn’t be subject to multiple levels of appeal.” Family law specialist David Burrows backed a move to look at alternatives to courts.

Charlie’s parents Chris Gard, 32, and Connie Yates, 31, fought for five months to go to the US for trial therapy. The 11-monthold, who had a genetic illness, died on Friday.
