MISPLACED CASE

Heinrich Albert, below, a diplomat at the German embassy in the US, got off a train in July 1915 and left his briefcase behind. Bad enough – but especially for him, as he was a spy. He jumped back on the train but the case had been nabbed by Frank Burke, a Secret Service agent hot on his tail. The documents were slyly leaked to the press by the US government, resulting in several German “diplomats” being given their marching orders and whipping up public support for the war.
