Boxed wine taps into a new market as sale figures rocket
SALES of wine in a box, the 1970s and 80s tipple once dismissed as cheap plonk on tap, are soaring.
Amazon sold 212% more in June and July compared to a year ago. And Marks & Spencer, which has launched a premium white burgundy, said sales are up a fifth this summer.
Boxed wine’s vacuum-packed 1.5-litre bags mean it can last six weeks after being opened and its packaging is much more environmentally friendly. Amazon’s Sebastian O’Keefe said: “Our customers are shrugging off the preconceptions of boxed wine and embracing the ease and environmental benefits.” Tom Craven, who runs Vinnaturo, a distributor only selling wine in cartons, said he saved 50% on transport costs.
