Medals of hero who helped clear D-Day sites to be sold

THE medals of the Second World War hero who led a unit on a secret D-Day mission are to be auctioned.

Lieutenant Frederick Balfour Scott won the Military Cross for his part in Operation Mallard on June 6, 1944.

The platoon commander and his troops were dropped in enemy territory in Normandy, France.

Lt Scott took several German positions as part of the operation to DARING OFFICER Lt Scott secure the landing beaches, despite coming under heavy fire. After D-Day he and his regiment, the Oxfordshir­e and Buckingham­shire Light Infantry, took part in other key battles including crossing the Rhine in 1945. The Scotsman, of Monifieth, Angus, died in 2011. The collection will be sold in Lichfield, Staffs, on Wednesday. Auctioneer Richard Winterton said: “Lt Scott’s story makes this medal group special.”
