MOEEN MAKES LIGHT WORK OF PINK BALL

- BY DEAN WILSON

ENGLAND’S spin wizard Moeen Ali feels like a weight has been lifted from his hands when it comes to day/night Test cricket.

He will be twirling away bowling the pink Dukes ball (above) selected for the first Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston and says it feels lighter than the usual red one.

Cricket balls are all supposed to weigh five-and-a-half ounces, but each of the pink ones Moeen has tried seems to have been on a diet.

“It’s different,” he said. “It feels lighter and a bit different off the bat.

“Sometimes you don’t feel like you’ve hit it and it goes, other times you’ve nailed it and it doesn’t. But you get used to it, I did at the end of the session.

“The seam is good, it’s not quite as slippery because the lacquer seems different to the red ball. It spun, but maybe that was because the seam is hard.”
