May urges end to ‘web poison’

-

THERESA May urged unity to purge the internet of “poisonous material” in the wake of the atrocity.

The PM, who yesterday spoke with her Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy, said: “We must work together if we are to confront this evil of terrorism, and also to deal with the perverted extremist ideology which drives it – ridding the internet of poisonous material, and ensuring our police and security services have the powers that they need.”

It came as Lord Alex Carlile, Britain’s former terror laws watchdog, said drivers should undergo identity checks when hiring vehicles under moves to tackle the use of lorries and vans in attacks.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described a requirement to display ID and “show what you are using the vehicle for” as “fair enough” but it was “crucial” to get more police officers on the street.
