IVF finally done it... Alex has a baby after 11 miscarriages

- BY LUCY THORNTON

A FIRST-time mum who lost six stone so she could have IVF treatment wept with joy after finally giving birth to a baby boy – after 11 miscarriages.

Bus driver Alexandra Smith, 38, was desperate to be a mum after years of “heartbreak.”

But when she applied to have IVF on the NHS she was told she was too heavy at 17 stone 1lb. After trying “all the diets in world” she went on strict calorie-control, walked 20,000 steps a day and hired a personal trainer. It took Alexandra two years to get down to 11 stone 12lb but seven weeks ago her hard graft paid off when Philip was born by caesarean, weighing 7lb 11.5oz. The proud mum, at home in Thornaby, North Yorks, with husband John, 36, said: “We’re over-the-moon. I’ve always wanted to be a mum.”
