Make a date with Scarlett

-

C4, 5.30pm THIS was the loud-mouthed, bolshy dating show that shot Davina McCall to fame in the late 1990s.

Davina bounded around various towns like a hyperactive puppy, grabbing unsuspecting shoppers to try to match them up with a date. A bit like Blind Date on the road, we would then catch up with couples later to see how they got on.

It became a bit of a cult hit, with a brief return on ITV2 in 2007 presented by Holly Willoughby. But it was only after a special last year that C4 bosses decided to bring it back full-time, with Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt at the helm.

And it’s the perfect job for her. She’s friendly, bold, not afraid to say what she thinks, and is actually quite funny.

We’ve all heard her one-liners, such as this gem from I’m A Celebrity: “Croc feet? I’ve never cooked anything I could high five.”

When she got this job, she tweeted: “I’m hoping I can find a date for myself. Forgot what it’s like to interact with the opposite sex.”

But despite the awful, awkward cringe factor of approaching strangers in the street for dates, Scarlett doesn’t lack confidence. There’s lots of running and occasional leaping over benches as she pants up to people to act as a go-between.

And then you’ll realise you have become strangely invested. Watching people on a first date is never easy, but Scarlett is charming and it’s all good fun. Right down to her moments of genuine elation when she actually gets a ‘Streetmate’ and the camera crew give her a little cheer.

In this first episode, personal trainer Austin is on the hunt for the perfect sparring partner. And in Cardiff, brainy beauty queen Sara wants someone who loves dinosaur fossils.
