Unions demanding action to end cap on public sector pay
THERESA May was yesterday urged by unions to take “concrete action” and scrap the public sector pay cap.
Reports suggested the end of the seven-year 1% restriction on rises could form part of the autumn Budget.
But unions were sceptical. FDA leader Dave Penman said reports “mean nothing without concrete action”. And the GMB’s Rehana Azam stressed “the devil will be in the detail”. She added: “All public sector workers must receive proper pay rises, including those not covered by pay review bodies like school support staff, council workers and police staff. “The Prime Minister will not be able to get away with sleight of hand.” The Treasury is soon to send out letters setting out the remit for public sector pay review bodies ahead of next year’s pay round. No10 said it could not comment on “speculation”.
