We have more gift packages for Mr Trump
North Korea’s newest threat
NORTH Korea yesterday warned it was preparing “gift packages” for the US – a clear threat of more missile launches.
President Donald Trump retaliated by pledging to help South Korea and Japan beef up their defences.
Tensions are soaring following North Korea’s claim to have tested a hydrogen bomb and to be near to fitting a nuke on a ballistic missile.
Last night Theresa May told Mr Trump North Korea poses a threat to “global peace”.
She told him in a phone call it was “important” for both countries to send a “clear message” that Pyong- yang’s “irresponsible and provocative actions” must end.
With the international community battling to avoid the crisis spilling out of control, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations warned of further displays after his country’s missile launch over Japan. Han Tae Song said: “Recent selfdefence measures are a ‘gift package’ addressed to none other than the US.
“The US will receive more ‘gift packages’ as long as it relies on reckless provocations.”
A No10 spokesman said that Mrs May and Mr Trump had “agreed on the key role China has to play” in settling nerves. China is North Korea’s closest ally and principle trade partner.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called for the United Nations to impose new sanctions on the regime of dictator Kim Jong-un.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin said sanctions would be “useless and counter-productive”.
Yesterday senior Navy officer Commodore Peter Sparkes said a new Type 45 destroyer could potentially be deployed to North Korea.
