Probe on ‘£55m food poison scam’ extended to Canaries
A PROBE into alleged fake food poisoning compensation claims by British tourists has been extended from Majorca to the Canary Islands.
Several expats, allegedly led by Laura Joyce, were held in Majorca this week on suspicion of touting for tourists to file false claims.
The scam is said to have been worth £55million over three years and officers are now studying claims in Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Joyce, who is eight months pregnant, has told friends she is “devastated” at her arrest on Tuesday and intends to clear her name. A judge in Palma released the 38-year-old, originally of Romford, East London, after two days in custody. Her bank accounts have since been frozen, according to reports in Spain.
