SUPPORTER OF THE REDS
On Wednesday, John Motson (left), the legendary voice of football, announced his retirement after 50 years in the commentary box. He’ll leave the BBC at the end of the season. I must have been about 11 when I first heard his distinctive tones. Motty’s commentaries were nothing if not characterful and unique. More recently, I have very fond memories of sharing a table with him at a Stamford Bridge dinner. Well, I say I remember – I actually can’t recall that much at all. Motty and I share a love of red wine. We shared a lot of it that night.
