Hero Spitfire pilot Nigel is dead at 99

- BY LOUIE SMITH

BATTLE of Britain Spitfire pilot Nigel Rose, credited with downing four Nazi aircraft, has died aged 99.

Squadron Leader Rose flew scores of sorties battling enemy planes with 602 Squadron in the Second World War.

His aircraft was once riddled with bullets that “made rather a mess of the Spitfire”. He landed “with no brakes, flaps or radio”.

He was shot in the arm but was back in the air less than a month later.

His death means just 10 survive of the 2,937 Battle of Britain fliers. John Pulfer, of the Battle of Britain Society, said: “All our chaps are 95 to 102. In a few years there will be none left.”

Doug Radcliffe, wireless operator on Second World War Bomber Command raids, has died aged 93.
